Are you completely new to Kendo? If so, you will need to take a beginners course to get you started training with us.  In that case, please continue reading below.

If you already have kendo experience, please read the subsequent section on joining the club.

Beginners’ Courses

If you want to start kendo, we offer an eight week beginners’ course most terms. We supply all the equipment necessary to start, except clothing. You only need to bring a track-suit or loose fitting light-weight clothing and a towel.

Courses fill quickly and enrolment is strictly on a first-come-first-served basis (on receipt of application form and fees), so once course bookings open for a particular course, we encourage you to book early.

Remember that Kendo is a full-contact physical activity, and you should carefully read the section on risks. Any beginners with a special medical condition must follow the procedure outlined in the British Kendo Association’s Significant Medical Issues Policy, and provide a signed copy of the following notification and authorisation form.

The Beginners Course costs £150, which includes club membership fees for the duration of the course, British Kendo Association Temporary Membership (covering your insurance to practice), instruction from experienced and fully qualified coaches, loan of club equipment for the duration of the course, and a free shinai (bamboo sword) to keep.

Please complete the following form here to enquire about our next beginners course.

Those completing the course are welcome to join the club and participate in our regular Tuesday and Friday practices. Kendo armour will be provided during the course, and new members can continue to borrow club armour subject to availability until they are ready to buy their own.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Joining Nenriki Kendo Club

Nenriki is a member’s club.  An annual club membership works out at £25 per month, payable by standing order.

Nenriki does not have a separate Juniors section and we normally only accept accompanied Juniors aged 15 or above who are capable of joining practice with adults. We have DBS checked instructors but our child protection policy requires anyone aged 18 years or less to be accompanied by a parent / guardian.

The club membership application form can be completed online here. Nenriki membership entitles you to train and use club equipment at the Dojo, and register with the BKA as a Nenriki member.

Membership of the British Kendo Association (the controlling body for Kendo in Britain) should be arranged separately. The current cost is about £45 per year or £30 for students / concessions. This will provide you insurance and permit you entry to a range of Kendo events (e.g. training camps, gradings and competitions).

More information on club membership can be found here.
